I'M NEW TO DANCE, PILATES AND FITNESS, ANY ADVICE?
Learning new skills can sometimes be confronting so try to relax and enjoy yourself. All classes are conducted in a non-judgmental and non-competitive environment so don’t worry about what others are doing, simply enjoy focusing on yourself!
You may find the initial session challenges your mind and body due to learning new movements, sequences and techniques. Remember that as you become more familiar with the exercises you will feel more comfortable and confident. The teacher will give exercise modifications that cater to both your strengths and weaknesses ensuring that no-matter your level of expertise you will be able to participate in all exercises.
I HAVE A PRE-EXISTING INJURY, IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO PARTICIPATE?
If you have a chronic or acute injury it is best to consult your general practitioner or an allied health professional before commencing any form of physical training. Once they have deemed it is safe for you to engage in a dance, Pilates or fitness program, please inform your teacher of any limitations your injury may cause so they can provide you with appropriate exercise modifications.
WILL MY MUSCLES BE SORE IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE TRAINING SESSION?
They may be - it greatly depends on your level of fitness. It is completely normal to experience ‘Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness’ (DOMS) post-exercise. This will generally last for up to three days. However, if pain persists contact your doctor. If you experience any pain during the session (other than the sensation that your muscles are fatiguing), stop what you are doing immediately and advise the teacher.
If you do not experience DOMS post-exercise it does not mean your muscles haven’t been engaged. More likely you are either fit and your muscles cope well with physical exertion (and the consequent recovery period) or you worked muscles that are accustomed to being placed under stress. DOMS is not always indicative of having further developed muscle strength.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR A HEALTH REBATE?
Yes, provided that you have Private Health Insurance and the appropriate level of cover entitling you to a health rebate. Some health funds require a letter of referral from your GP indicating that it is necessary you engage in a fitness program due to an existing health condition. Contact your health fund, advise them that you will be participating in a fitness program with a registered AusActive Professional and ask whether or not you are eligible for a health rebate.
NB: Health Funds are currently making changes to the rebates provided and this may affect your eligibility for cover.
