Contemporary dance is a fusion of various dance-styles including ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop and indigenous dance. Movement patterns are generally less formal than those of ballet; body parts move simultaneously in numerous directions and on various spatial planes including on the ground (often referred to as “floor-work”). Muscles are engaged in a wide range of movements such as twisting, reaching, contracting and releasing. Improvisation may also take place, prompting dancers to explore their creative and interpretive skills. In many ways, contemporary dance is comparable to contemporary art; its forms are boundless, often abstract and subject to personal interpretation.
